Description
Since the early 1940's, the development of nuclear reactors paved the road for the study of nuclear and magnetic properties of matter by neutron scattering. Since then, the neutrons generated in nuclear research reactors have been used as a fundamental tool for studies in condensed matter. The 21. century is the start of a new era in which neutrons are generated through spallation, dramatically changing the way data are collected and analyzed. The European Spallation Source (ESS) is the latest and most ambitious of these projects. (authors)
