Disposal of low and intermediate level waste in rock caverns

  • 1. Ontario Hydro, Toronto, ON (Canada)

Description

Rock caverns are considered in various countries for disposal of LLW (low level wastes) and ILW (intermediate level wastes). As part of studies and development within Ontario Hydro of disposal options two such schemes have been developed from several initially considered. Both these schemes are generic, i.e., not tied to any specific site. However, a site with relatively impervious rock geomedium, accessible at shallow to intermediate depth, is preferable. Such sites are available in Southern Ontario
