Evidence for long-lived heavy particles with fractional charge
Description
Three cosmic-ray events have been detected which can be interpreted in terms of long-lived (>> 10-8 sec) particles with charges ( +- 10%) of +- 0.70, +- 0.68, and +- 0.42 respectively, and masses greater than 4.4m/sub p/, 4.8m/sub p/, and 20m/sub p/ at the 90% confidence level, respectively. The probability for explaining the events in terms of previously known particles is estimated and found to be low
