Fuel can for LMFBR type reactor

  • 1. Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corp., Tokyo (Japan)

Description

In a fuel can for an LMFBR type reactor, after fabricating a hollow plug made of a shape memory alloy perforated with a through hole at the axial center such that the outer diameter is slightly greater than the inner diameter of a fuel can, and applying a diameter-reducing fabrication, it is then inserted into a predetermined position. The insertion portion is heated to such a temperature that the tissue, hardness or the like is not substantially changed to recover the plug outer diameter to the initial dimension, thereby fixing to the inner surface of the fuel can. As a result, a fuel can having uniform size and property and excellent bondability with the plug can be obtained without deteriorating the appearance. Since the fuel can can sufficiently support fuel pellets even if it is used as a fuel pin, there occurs no problem as in the conventional lower plenum type fuel pin, such as disturbance in the flow of coolant, reduction of the swelling resistance or shortening the fuel pin life. It is desirable that the transformation temperature of the shape memory alloy is lower than 200degC. (N.H.)
