Operational experience in reprocessing Fast Reactor fuel at Dounreay

  • 1. AEA Technology, Dounreay (United Kingdom)

Description

The paper describes the United Kingdom's operational experience in Fast Reactor fuel reprocessing. Since 1980 the Dounreay Plant has reprocessed 17.2 tonnes fuel (3 tonnes of Pu) to 17.6 % burn-up and with cooling times ranging from 4 to 24 months. Routine reprocessing of this fuel caused no problems in operation and the experience, in conjunction with the continuing programme of equipment and flow sheet development, provides a sound basis for future plant design.
