Synthesis and investigation of nuclei at the limits of stability

  • 1. Gesellschaft fuer Schwerionenforschung m.b.H., Darmstadt (Germany, F.R.)

Description

After the successful production of element 107 and 109 the investigation of the heaviest elements was successfully extended to the even elements. Data on the decay of element 106 and the new element 108 are presented. The production cross sections will be discussed. The observation of α-decay for the even-even isotope 260106 and of element 108 indicates an unexpectedly high stability of the heaviest elements against fission caused by high shell effects.
