Description

Sero-monitoring of the current national vaccination campaign against rinderpest in Ghana has been ongoing for a number of years. An extensive national survey conducted in 1992 indicated that 71% of the national herd was immune, although on an individual herd basis only 35% of herds are protected against rinderpest. A similar survey completed in 1993 indicates that this level of immunity has now risen to 76% with 58% of herds protected. This considerable improvement must be considered in conjunction with the need to achieve 85% immunity in herds to ensure the elimination of both the disease and its causative virus.
