Description

A brief description is given of the fission process, the production of heat and plutonium from uranium in nuclear reactors, and the essential features of Magnox, AGR, PWR and fast reactors. The cases put forward by those in favour of and those opposing nuclear power programmes are summarised. The need for an energy source beyond coal and oil, the economics of nuclear power, the treatment of radioactive waste, safety, radiation hazards and the problems that have arisen with various reactors are among the topics summarised.
