A Strategy on the Disposal of Below Intermediate Level Radwastes

Even though in-depth classification and disposal methodology has been suggested in NSSC Notice No 2014-53, delivery regulation on the low and intermediate level radwastes, the great number of radwaste generator are still faced on the difficulties because the detailed requirements of disposition would be determined by individual events. On the basis of legal guideline, the most important requirement on the permanent disposal of low and intermediate level radwastes is the determination of radionuclides more than 95% of concentration. In general, destructive analysis of each individual drums are performed with standard chemical procedure to analyze the concentration of radionuclides. In other wards, radwaste generators should establish the sequential methodologies as follows: the classification of target radwaste, estimation methodology of radionuclide inventories, radiochemical separation and radioactivity measurements, QC/QA of radionuclides data base, statistical approach of radionuclides estimation and etc. Therefore, a state of the domestic generation and legal guidelines for permanent disposal of below intermediate level radwastes are reviewed in this report in addition with the various examples of radionuclide inventory methodologies.
