Initial examination for ischemic stroke: CT or MRI?

If an ischemic stroke is suspected, both CT/CT angiography (CTA) and MRI/MR angiography (MRA) can be used as initial examinations. An advantage of MRI is its higher sensitivity in identifying ischemia and its better differentiation from other, similar-appearing diseases.

Abstract (German)

Bei Verdacht auf einen ischämischen Schlaganfall können sowohl eine CT/CT-Angiografie (CTA) als auch eine MRT/MR-Angiografie (MRA) als Ausgangsuntersuchung eingesetzt werden. Ein Vorteil der MRT ist dabei ihre höhere Sensitivität bei der Identifizierung von Ischämien und die bessere Abgrenzung gegenüber anderen, ähnlich erscheinenden Erkrankungen. (© Thieme.
