The luminosity-diameter relations of elliptical galaxies in different environments

Description
The extensive survey of photometric data of Burstein et al. (1987) are used to reexamine the luminosity-size relation of about 160 elliptical galaxies belonging to different regions in order to search for possible dependence of this relation on the galaxy environment. For each galaxy, the total blue luminosity, the isophotal diameter, the effective diameter, and the diameter within which a galaxy has a mean surface brightness of 20.75 M mag/sq arcsec are considered. The ellipticals of the Virgo, Coma, and Perseus clusters which are located in the inner and outer cluster regions are separately considered. No significant differences are found in various linear relations relative to different subsamples of ellipticals located in different environments. It is concluded that the data base of Burstein et al. gives no signatures of appreciable environmental effects on the luminosity-size relations of ellipticals. 32 refs
