Off-normal performance of a sodium-to-air natural draft heat exchanger
Description
This paper reports that natural convection decay heat removal for the reactor core is an important safety feature for innovative liquid metal reactor (LMR) plant designs, and a natural draft heat exchanger (NDHX) is a typical heat exchanger found in these systems. A thermal/hydraulic model of a finned sodium-to-air NDHX has been developed to evaluate the performance during low air flow conditions. Tests conducted on a large NDHX at the Energy Technology Engineering Center (ETEC) indicated that at low air flow (Re < 4000), the actual performance is lower than the performance predicted using the Heat Transfer Research Inc. (HTRI) correlations. The model was developed to reconcile this difference, and it resulted in excellent agreement to the test data. This model was then extended to analyze accident scenarios in LMRs
