A brief history of heavy water
Description
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory uses 1000 tons of heavy water as part of the detection system for solar neutrinos. The author presents a brief history of heavy water beginning from the first concentration of deuterium in water by Washburn and Urey in 1932 by electrolysis through to the industrial scale production needed for the CANDU electric power stations. The history touches on the various applications of heavy water as a fission reactor coolant/moderator and on the alternatives used in the production process
