Vitamin E as A chemical radioprotector for controlling the radiation induced changes in the levels of protein and urea in the serum of irradiated rats

Adult white female albino rats were intraperitoneally injected with vitamin E pre-whole body gamma irradiation at the dose of 7 Gy to evaluated its radioprotective efficiency on irradiated animals. The changes induced in the levels of protein and urea in the serum of rats were investigated on the first, third, seventh and tenth days after radiation radiation exposure. Gamma irradiation significantly increased the level of serum protein approximately by about 21% on the third day post irradiation, while a significant decrease of about 34% and 18% was recorded on the seventh and 10% days after irradiation; respectively. At the same time intervals, the level of serum urea significantly decreased by about 23% on the first day post-irradiation, but significantly increased by about 23%, 61% and 41% on the third, seventh and tenth days after irradiation; respectively. In the case of irradiated rats treated with vitamin E before irradiation, a remarkable recovery was observed in the variations of serum protein content at all post-irradiation days, while slight recovery occurred in the changes in the level of serum urea. 2 tab
