Development of DAQ system for the acquisition of neutrino bursts from core collapse supernovae in a DUNE far detector
Description
The main goal of the DUNE experiment is to perform an ultimate study of neutrino oscillations over long distances and to search for CP violation in the neutrino sector. The experiment, containing about 40 kton of liquid argon, has also excellent sensitivity to detect neutrinos from astrophysical sources such as neutrino bursts from core collapse supernova (SNa). This additional physics goal introduces challenging aspects in the DUNE data acquisition/trigger system, which should be able of detecting neutrinos from a Supernova burst over a time window of the order of 10 seconds and dealing with a very large dataflow. This work is contributing to study possible solutions for the design of the basic elements of the data acquisition back-end system, capable of dealing with the requirements related to the SNa trigger and interfacing with the front-end system developed at IP2I for a DUNE far detector module. In more details, its aim is to reduce the overall dataflow from this module in real time while not missing any potentially interesting physics event. To realize these real time treatments, FPGA boards with network interfaces have been used. Two main studies were performed during this thesis: - Online compression right after the channel digitization and online decompression in order to be able to do other treatments on the raw data before them being stored. - Online search for trigger primitives, which are indicators of activity inside the detector and the first steps for the definition of the SNa trigger. Abstract (French)
L'objectif principal de l'experience DUNE est de realiser une etude poussee des oscillations de neutrinos sur de longues distances et de rechercher une violation de CP dans le secteur des neutrinos. Le detecteur, qui contient environ 40 kton d'argon liquide, a egalement une excellente sensibilite pour detecter les neutrinos provenant de sources astrophysiques telles que les neutrinos provenant de l'effondrement d'un noyau de supernova (SNa). Cet objectif physique supplementaire impose des defis au systeme d'acquisition de donnees et de trigger de DUNE, qui doit etre capable de detecter les neutrinos d'une explosion de supernova sur une fenetre de temps de l'ordre de 10 secondes et de traiter un flux de donnees tres important. Ce travail contribue a etudier les solutions possibles pour la conception des elements de base du systeme back-end d'acquisition de donnees, capable de repondre aux exigences liees au declenchement des SNa et de s'interfacer avec le systeme front-end developpe a l'IP2I pour un module du detecteur lointain de DUNE. Plus precisement, son objectif est de reduire le flux de donnees global de ce module en temps reel tout en ne manquant aucun evenement physique potentiellement interessant. Pour realiser ces traitements en temps reel, des cartes FPGA avec des interfaces reseaux ont ete utilisees. Deux etudes principales ont ete realisees au cours de cette these: - La compression en ligne juste apres la numerisation des canaux et la decompression en ligne afin de pouvoir effectuer d'autres traitements sur les donnees brutes avant leur stockage. - La recherche en ligne de trigger primitives, qui sont des indicateurs d'activite a l'interieur du detecteur et les premieres etapes pour la definition du trigger des SNa. Le manuscrit reprend tous les resultats obtenus et les detaille en 6 chapitres. (auteur)
