Determination of C and O and other elements by alpha-induced X-ray energy spectrometry

Description
X-ray energy spectrometry combined with alpha-excitation by means of radionuclides, especially Po-210, has been found as a versatile tool for multielement analysis. Down to Z = 6 (carbon) qualitative and quantitative measurements have been carried out with energy resolution good enough to separate adjacent elements. Thereby errors and lowest detectable concentrations were in the region of one percent. By utilizing M- and L-X-radiation the set of detectable elements can be opened to high atomic numbers. As an example with special regard to environmental research cadmium in organic matrix was measured down to 100 ppm without any preconcentration. Much lower detection limits might be reached by appropriate measures. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Die Anregung charakteristischer Roentgenstrahlen durch α-Partikel einer radioaktiven Quelle wird fuer die energiedispersive Roentgenfluoreszenzanalyse, insbesondere fuer leichte Elemente, angewandt. Damit konnten bis zur Ordnungszahl Z = 6 qualitative und quantitative Bestimmungen durchgefuehrt werden mit einer fuer benachbarte Elemente ausreichenden Aufloesung. Die erzielten Nachweisgrenzen liegen fuer C und O unter Beruecksichtigung der Messfehler um 1%. Nahezu alle Elemente koennen unter Ausnutzung ihrer L- und M-Emissionen nachgewiesen werden. Als Beispiel fuer ein toxisches Element wurde Cadmium in organischer Matrix bis zu einer Konzentration von 100 ppm ohne Anreicherung bestimmt. Wesentlich geringere Konzentrationen duerften mit geeigneten Massnahmen nachweisbar sein. (orig.)Additional details
