Search for H I in elliptical galaxies
Creators
Description
A search has been made for 21-cm emission from neutral hydrogen in the normal elliptical galaxies NGC 2768, GC 4125, NGC 4278, and NGC 4472 using the NRAO 140-ft telescope. None of the galaxies were definitely detected and upper limits on the order of several times 108M0 are set for the mass of optically thin neutral hydrogen. The implications of these upper4imit masses are briefly discussed in terms of the mass balance of the interstellar medium in elliptical galaxies.
