Sensitivity of Al, Sn and Zn grains to α particle irradiation and the global heating model

Description
Under irradiation with monoenergetic alpha particles, single selected superconducting Zn and Al grains show a sharp and reproducible threshold in the applied magnetic field for the transition to the normal state. This threshold corresponds to a well defined heating of the grain, indicating that the grain acts like a little calorimeter. Both the absolute value of the threshold and its temperature variation are in good agreement with a global heating model using the superconducting specific heat. (author) 10 refs.; 5 figs
