Description
The spin precession frequency of optically pumped 199Hg atoms in an applied electric field has been measured to set a limit on the electric dipole moment of these atoms as a test of time reversal symmetry. Our result, d(199Hg)<9.1x10-28 e-cm, is the most precise experimental bound on an electric dipole moment and provides a new test for theories of time reversal symmetry violation in atomic systems
