The Oklo reactors: natural analogues to nuclear waste repositories
Description
A systematic study of fission-produced elements in the Oklo natural reactor enables their behaviour in a natural geologic environment to be evaluated. The 2 billion year-old reactors operated intermitently for about 5x105y and produced some 6 tonnes of fission products which can be used as natural isotopic tracers. Studies indicate that the majority of the radioactive materials were contained within the Oklo site. This suggests that natural repositories with suitable geological characteristics can be used for storage of radioactive waste
