Activities of the targets and ion source working group for ISL

  • 1. Simon Fraser Univ., Burnaby, British Columbia (Canada)
  • 2. LAMPF, Los Alamos, NM (United States)

Description

A working group has been established to explore some of the problems and to seek solutions in the area of targets and ion sources for the ISL facility. Following the workshop held in Oak Ridge last year, which was oriented to technical issues at ISL along with prototype experiments, groups of interested individuals volunteered to initiate studies related to some of the identified problems. At present these fall into the categories: (1) demonstrating thick and thin target production systems; (2) target station design studies and related matters; (3) ion source developments. More specifically, some of these projects of interest include development and testing of a thin target gas-jet-system for use with high intensity proton beams, development of laser ion sources for applications with ISOL devices, systematic studies of the properties of ECR ion sources particularly for the production of multiply charged radioactive ions, and demonstration of the use of thick targets in high intensity, high energy beams. The status of this working group is discussed along with further discussion of the full range of problems; a timetable is also explored
