Periastron shifts in the binary system PSR 1913+16: theoretical interpretation

Description
Measurements of the shift in the periastron of a recently discovered close binary system containing a pulsar may be interpreted in several ways: as a test of relativistic gravity, as a means of measuring the total mass of the system, or as a means of setting limits on the size and structure of the pulsar's companion. We present formulae for the relativistic periastron shift and for the shift produced by the bodies' quadrupole moments, and discuss each interpretation in detail
