A comparison of various methods for treating feedstuffs for laboratory animals

Various treatment methods regarding the treatment and processing of food for laboratory animals are compared in a review study. Normal sterilization processes such as autoclaves or heat treatment, are dealt with as well as chemical treatment, such as that with ethylereoxide, and finally also food treatment with radiation. The effectiveness of these methods of treatment is compared with the most varied parameters. As long as the irradiation is kept within doses in the tolerable limits region, i.e. within which no negative radiation effects such as cancerogenity, radiation toxicity, and mutagenic radiation effects arise, it can be said that the treatment of food for this purpose with radiation is superior to all other methods without significant losses of such as vitamins, proteins, and other essential components in the food. Abstract (German)
In einer Uebersichtstudie werden verschiedene Behandlungsmethoden bezueglich Nahrungsbehandlung und -bearbeitung fuer Labortiere einander gegenuebergestellt. Es handelt sich dabei um normale Sterilisationsverfahren wie Autoklavieren und Hitzebehandlung, ferner um chemische Behandlung wie die Behandlung mit Aethylenoxid, und schliesslich auch um die Nahrungsbehandlung mit Strahlen. Die Wirksamkeit dieser Behandlungsmethoden wird unter den verschiedensten Parametern miteinander verglichen. Soweit es sich bei der Bestrahlung um Dosen handelt, die im erlaubten Bereich liegen, d.h. innerhalb derer keine negativen Strahleneffekte wie Cancerogenitaet, Strahlentoxizitaet und mutagene Strahlenwirkungen auftreten, kann gesagt werden, dass die Behandlung der Nahrung fuer diese Zwecke mit Strahlen allen anderen Methoden ueberlegen ist, ohne dass entscheidende Verluste in der Nahrung - wie Verlust von Vitaminen, Proteinen und anderen essentiellen Bestandteilen auftreten.
