Annual report of Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, 1986.4-1987.3

Description

During fiscal year 1986, the works of JAERI were continued mainly on three research subjects: nuclear safety and the development of a high temperature gas-cooled reactor and nuclear fusion. Studies were also carried out on the fundamental research, the application of radiation, the development of nuclear ships and the fields related to these main subjects. The fund from the special account for electric power resource development went into the subjects related to the engineered safety research. Also the subjects related to environmental safety research were studied. The modified design of the high temperature engineering test reactor was advanced, and the tests using the HENDEL were carried out. The Naka Fusion Research Establishment was completed, and nuclear fusion research was begun. The construction of the port facilities at Sekinehama as the home port of the nuclear ship 'Mutsu' was in progress. The reactor physics related to FBRs and ATRs was studied, and the reactor materials and fuels were tested. The research reactors JRR-2 and JRR-4 and the material testing reactor JMTR were operated for service irradiation. Under the reconstruction program for JRR-3, the reactor tank and biological shielding were removed. (Kako, I.)
