Multi-dimensional solitons and its contribution to beam-plasma discharge
- 1. Tokushima Univ. (Japan). Faculty of Engineering
Description
Experimental results with respect to an upper hybrid solitary wave (soliton) were presented. Amplitude of the soliton was up to 4 Volt in peak to peak at the terminal of oscilloscope in a 50-Ω system. The Kerr-effect caused by such a large amplitude wave was observed. It was found that the soliton had a tendency to interact strongly with plasma and slanted itself when the plasma density was high. An numerical analysis of one-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation with the nonlinear Landau-damping term was performed. The result of the analysis was quite similar to that of the experiments. Initiation of the Beam-Plasma Discharge (BPD) depended essentially on the activity of the soliton. It was found that when the collapsing-like phenomenon happened, the beam current became chaotic and the frequency spectre was spread which was necessary for the initiation of BPD. (author)
