Description
We offer a novel interpretation for the deviation of the experimental angular distribution of the elastic 18O + 184W scattering from the standard Fresnel pattern in terms of an interference of scattering from different orientations of the target nucleus. We then use the geometric scattering theory to calculate the fusion cross section between heavy ions and discuss possible advantages of neutron rich beams in synthesizing super heavy elements. We also comment on the importance of Coriolis coupling in order to treat the long range Coulomb coupling. (author)
