Oxidation of naphthalene, 2-methyl-naphthalene and alpha-napthol by cerium(4) in perchloric acid solutions

Description

In the two-phase system aqueous or aqueous-acetonitrile solution of perchloric acid-carbon tetrachloride or n-hexane cerium(4), perchlorate oxidates with high yields alpha-naphthol and naphtalene to 1.4-naphthoquinone, as well as 2-methylnaphthalene to 2-methyl- and 6-methyl-1.4-napgthoquinone. Consumption of cerium (4) perchlorate for oxidation of 1 mmol of alpha-naphthol amounts to approx. 4.5 mmol, for oxidation of 1 mmol naphthalene or 2-methylnaphthalene approx. 6.5-7.5 mmol.
