PEBSINO: Measuring the positron fraction in cosmic rays up to 100 GeV

Description

Full text: In the quest for dark matter, the positron fraction in cosmic rays is a key observable as it might indicate the presence of decaying dark matter particles. Its precise measurement in a series of balloon flights is the main goal of the PEBS collaboration. Following the success of the first prototype, PERDAix (see poster by L. Shchutska), a second detector, PEBSINO, is planned for summer 2012 from Kiruna, Sweden. It will consist of a scintillating fibre tracker, two transition radiation detectors and an electromagnetic calorimeter allowing a maximal detectable rigidity of ∼100 GV. In addition, a 0.2T permanent magnet will allow to separate between positrons and electrons up to 60 GeV. Its large acceptance of 100 cm2 sr will make flux measurements as precise as PAMELA, possible within 5 days. (author)
