Description

Duke Power Company has seven operating pressurized water reactors, representing over 7400 MW of installed capacity. A large generation base of nuclear units requires a utility to be prepared to use some nuclear generation in a load follow capacity. The decision to load follow a given unit is based not only on economics, but also on technical considerations. This paper describes a program being developed by Duke Power Company in conjunction with Shanstrom Nuclear Associates, which will aid the station reactor engineer in planning power maneuvers. The usefulness of this program also extends beyond load follow to such areas as xenon prediction, reactor trip recovery, return-to-power operations, and unplanned power reductions
