E.K. Zavoiskii and NMR: analysis of the logbooks and rerunning of the experiments

  • 1. Kazanskij Federal'nyj Universitet, ul. Kremlevskaya, 18, Kazan', 420008 (Russian Federation)

Description

The analysis of the laboratory logbooks by E.K. Zavoiskii, the discoverer of electron paramagnetic resonance, has shown that beginning from 1941 he continuously attempted to observe NMR of different nuclei in a condensed matter. Repetition of these NMR experiments demonstrated that the sensitivity of the ''grid current'' method invented by E.K. Zavoiskii was quite sufficient to observe easily NMR in water solutions of paramagnetic salts. It is probable that the poor reproducibility of Zavoiskii NMR experimental results was caused by inadequate homogeneity of magnetic field of the electromagnets he used.
