Development of an automatic apparatus for the measurement of galvanomagnetic and thermomagnetic effects. Studies on transport in pyrolytic graphite
Description
The phenomenological aspects of transport in a conductor are reviewed first; after which an experimental device to measure galvanomagnetic and thermomagnetic effects is described. The electronic structure and transport properties of graphite are studied. The results of an experimental study on the basal transport properties of pyrolytic graphite are then given: electrical and thermal properties in zero field (electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity, thermoelectric power), galvanomagnetic and thermomagnetic effects, electrical magneto-resistivity in very strong fields. The contribution of diffusion in thermomagnetic effects is analyzed and arguments are put forward to support the hypothesis of the existence of instabilities in graphite, capable of explaining the anomalies observed in the analysis of galvanomagnetic effects

On rappelle tout d'abord les aspects phenomenologiques du transport dans un conducteur. On decrit ensuite un dispositif experimental permettant de mesurer les effets galvanomagnetiques et thermomagnetiques. On etudie la structure electronique et les proprietes de transport du graphite. On donne ensuite les resultats d'une etude experimentale des proprietes de transport basales du graphite pyrolytique: proprietes electriques et thermiques en champ nul (resistivite electrique, conductivite thermique, pouvoir thermoelectrique), effets galvanomagnetiques et thermomagnetiques, magneto-resistivite electrique en champ tres fort. On analyse la contribution de la diffusion dans les effets thermomagnetiques et on presente les arguments favorables a l'hypothese de l'existence d'instabilites dans le graphite, pouvant expliquer les anomalies constatees dans l'analyse des effets galvanomagnetiquesFiles
