Radiotherapy for cancer
Description
This is a report on radiotherapy for cancer presented in the lecture held on September 28, 1994. Firstly, the present status of radiotherapy for cancer in Japan is compared with that in the United States. Five-year survival rate is approximately 37% in Japan as compared with 57% in the United States. The usage rate of radiotherapy is extremely lower in Japan (approximately 16%-26%) than the United States (approximately 40%-50%). External and internal irradiation techniques are mentioned. The advantages of radiotherapy are emphasized in view of body conservation. Finally, economical aspects and problems of radiotherapy are presented as future issues to be solved. (N.K.)

1895年にレントゲンによりX線が発見されてから、今年でちょうど100年になる。医療場面で放射線は診断と治療に利用され、医学の進歩に寄与していることは周知の通りである。日本と米国の比較を混じえて、癌患者さんの実態と治療成績に触れ、その中で放射線治療がどのように利用されているかを概説し、日本における放射線治療の問題点についても述べる。(日本)Additional details
