Description

In the last few years, the instabilities of zonal currents in planetary atmospheres were discussed from the viewpoint of the formation of vortices of the type of the Great Red Spot of Jupiter. For example, Sagdeev et al. have obtained the solution of the hydrodynamic equations that include the Coriolis force. This solution describes a Rossby vortex supported by a parallel flow with a shear. The bifurcation of a shear flow to a set of vortices drifting through the background flow has been observed experimentally. This paper considers the stability conditions of a shear flow in the presence of the Coriolis force
