Corrosion and antifouling characteristics of technetium 99 in seawater

  • 1. AN SSSR, Moscow. Inst. Fizicheskoj Khimii

Description

The results are presented of studying the corrosive and antifouling properties of metallic technetium-99 in the Barents Sea and the Sea of Japan. Foil of 99Tc glued on acrylic plastic served as a sample. High corrosion resistance and antifouling properties exhibited by 99Tc in seawater point to favorable prospects of further studies aimed at development of new methods for protection against corrosion and fouling of metallic structures and parts with the use of technetium. The antifouling properties of technetium would evidently be used most efficiently when coating materials of high corrosion resistance to seawater (titanium, stainless steels, special alloys, etc.) with layers of technetium. The use of technetium for coating low-alloyed or carbon steels employed in seawater is yet problematic
