Experimental study of graphite reactivity in sulfuric acid solutions with or without uranium: spectroscopic characterization of graphite intercalation compounds

Description

This work is devoted to the study of the reactivity of graphite in sulfuric solutions with or without uranyl ions between 20 and 300 deg. C. Its aim is to explain the alteration phenomena observed on natural graphite close to uranium deposits and to determine the possible role of graphite in the precipitation of this mineral. With sulfuric acid, the first spontaneous synthesis of insertion compounds is carried out chemically without the addition of oxidants. The introduction of uranyl ions into the sulfuric solution not only facilitates the insertion of the sulphates thanks to their oxidizing nature, but also leads to the formation of a new phase in which the uranyl ions are associated with the sulphates. The structure of the uranyl-sulfate phase was studied by X-ray diffraction. The compounds obtained were characterized by Raman and infrared spectroscopies. The inserted species were also highlighted. Finally, a pressure study is carried out to determine the classic redox reactions between graphite and dilute sulfuric solutions
