Evaluation on fatigue properties of carbon steels in high temperature water. Effects of dissolved oxygen concentration and sulfur content on fatigue crack initiation and growth

Description
In order to evaluate the effects of dissolved oxygen concentration and sulfur contents on the fatigue properties of carbon steels, the fatigue testings were carried out for the three heats of carbon steels in high temperature water. Following results were obtained. The number of cycles for fatigue crack initiation depend upon dissolved oxygen concentration, but do not depend upon the sulfur contents and material processing. Greater crack growth rate appeared in the high sulfur steel than the medium sulfur steel. Effect of dissolved oxygen concentration on crack growth rate was not observed. (author)
