18FDG PET/CT in adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of lung

Description
Adenocarcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma are the predominant histological subtypes in Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma. It is necessary to differentiate between the two because genetic alterations that can be targeted by drugs are mainly seen in Adenocarcinoma, and so unnecessary drugs can be avoided in cases of Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Also, the metastatic potential of Adenocarcinoma is high and is associated with a poorer Disease-Free Survival. In approximately 62% cases the TNM staging is modified after an 18FDG PET-CT scan, thus also preventing patients from undergoing unnecessary further investigations. A higher value of SUVmax was observed in cases of Squamous Cell Carcinoma as compared to Adenocarcinoma of lung on 18FDG PET-CT
