Candidate radio absorption line in the quasar PHL 61 - some interpretations

Description
Radio spectra of PHL 61 (Takahara et al., 1983) are analyzed in a search for CO radio lines of redshift greater than 1. A possible absorption feature at 39.317 GHz is tentatively attributed to one of two CO lines at z(a) = 1.9318 or 1.8578, or to a pair of CN lines at z(a) = 1.8784. Optical, UV, and radio observational tests of this hypothesis are proposed, and it is reported that 320-500-nm observations with the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory in August-September 1984 did not find the strong redshifted Ly-alpha lines predicted by this interpretation. 14 references
