Trend chart: bio-methane injected in gas distribution systems - First quarter 2024, No. 643 - May 2024

Description

As of March 31, 2024, 674 facilities were injecting biomethane, after biogas production and purification, into natural gas networks. Their capacity amounted to 12.2 TWh/year, up 2% on the end of 2023. Additional capacity of 292 GWh/year was installed in the first quarter of 2024, less than in the first quarter of 2023 (654 GWh/year). Of the total installed capacity, 51% is made up of small-scale plants with a capacity of less than 15 GWh/year, which account for just 28%. Methanization units account for 93% of total capacity. At the end of the first quarter of 2024, the capacity of the 858 projects on the waiting list stood at 13.9 TWh/year, down 1% on the end of 2023. In addition, 13 non-methanizing biomethane plants (synthetic methane obtained by pyrogasification) are planned, with a maximum production capacity of 736 GWh/year. Production of biomethane injected into networks continues to grow. It stood at 2.7 TWh PCS in the first quarter of 2024, up 32% on the first quarter of 2023. Four regions - Grand Est, Hauts-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Ile-de-France - accounted for 59% of the installed capacity and 59% of injections at the end of the first quarter 2024.
