Corroborative tests for Oarai Waste Reduction Treatment Facility using the in-can type high frequency induction heating method

OWTF (Oarai Waste Reduction Treatment Facility) is constructed for volume reduction processing and stabilization treatment of α solid waste, which was generated from hot facilities in Oarai Research and Develop Center of Japan Atomic Energy Agency, using in-can type high frequency induction heating by remote control. This report describes corroborative tests, in which incinerating and melting performance for OWTF is confirmed with a full-scale testing furnace. We have been carrying out the tests of incinerating and melting treatment with some kinds of simulated wastes, such as enclosure form of radioactive wastes, material and articles. The results of these tests are as follows; (1) Melting treatment with complex products. Melting treatment tests were carried out with complex products such as motor, cable, substrate and rust-proof goods, then the treatment conditions were clarified. The methods of treatment are two patterns. The first one is to set an initial item into a canister before heating. The second one is additional putting of items during heating. (2) Alloying treatment of Aluminum and Iron-based metal. The alloying treatment of aluminum and iron-based metal in anticipation of proposal has been carried out. The appropriate ratio of aluminum and iron-based metal for alloying and the safety processing was clarified. As to forming voids in the alloys, except melting treatment using slag, other treatments should be taken. (3) Slag melting treatment and Sampling test. The melting conditions with slag have been clarified. In addition, the sampling conditions have been clarified for collecting the minimum amount of the molten metal sample for nuclide analysis. (4) Incineration treatment test. Incineration test has been carried out using poly-vinyl chloride and acrylic, etc. It is difficult to incinerate in general. The adhesion of ash to the metal bucket and the mineralization were observed, then and the appropriate treatments were confirmed. (author)
