Phase diagram of the Co-rich portion of the Nd-Co binary system

Description

The Co-rich portion (≥ 50.0 at.% Co) of the Nd-Co binary system has been re-investigated using DTA, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and EPMA techniques. A revised binary phase diagram for this portion is proposed which consists of six peritectic reactions, one congruently melting reaction and one eutectic reaction. Intermetallic compounds Nd2Co3, NdCo2, NdCo3, Nd2Co7, Nd5Co19 and NdCo5 are formed through these six peritectic reactions. The Nd2Co17 compound is formed by congruent melting. The eutectic reaction L↔Nd2Co17+α-Co occurs at 1306deg C. The eutectic alloy contains 92.9 at.% Co. The solid solubility of Nd in cobalt is extremely small, being approximately 0.03 at.% at 1000deg C. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Der Co-reiche Teil (≥ 50 At.-% Co) des binaeren Systems Nd-Co wurde untersucht mit DTA, lichtoptischer Mikroskopie, Roentgenbeugung und Mikrosondenanalysen. Ein ueberarbeitetes Phasendiagramm dieses Teils des Systems wird vorgestellt. Die intermetallischen Verbindungen Nd2Co3, NdCo2, NdCo3, Nd2Co7, Nd5Co19 und NdCo5 bilden sich durch peritektische Reaktionen. Die Verbindung Nd2Co17 bildet sich kongruent. Die eutektische Reaktion L↔Nd2Co17+α-Co laeuft bei 1306deg C ab. Die eutektische Zusammensetzung enthaelt 92,9 At.-% Co. Die Loeslichkeit von Nd in festem Co ist mit ungefaehr 0,03 At.-% bei 1000deg C sehr klein. (orig.)
