The region 2 drift chambers for the CEBAF large acceptance spectrometer

Description

The CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) Region 2 drift chambers are currently being constructed at Old Dominion University. The electrode configuration is the multilayer hexagonal-cell pattern used by the other two regions of CLAS wire chambers. The six Region 2 chambers are located between the coils of the CLAS super-conducting magnets and each contain approximately 2400 sense wires over a 4.5 m span. Spatial constraints and the presence of a large magnetic field generated interesting design problems unique to Region 2. Nonconducting endplates are being used in order to minimize endplate motion during magnetic field fluctuations. Compact wire connecting and signal transfer hardware was designed in order to maximize the acceptance of the Region 2 chambers. Endplate configuration and associated hardware designs will be presented as well as results from prototype testing
