The analytical use of prompt gamma-rays using various types of neutron sources

  • 1. Technische Univ. Muenchen, Garching (Germany, F.R.). Inst. fuer Radiochemie

Description

The analytical use of prompt gamma-rays originating from neutron capture is valuable completition of the conventional neutron activation analysis. The application of the external radiation tube P2 of the research reactor in Munich, an Am-Be neutron source of 300 mCi and a 1 mg 252Cf neutron source is discussed. Using the external radiation tube samples of bioloo.ical interest were investigated and their nitrogen and hydrogen conter't was determined with a sensitivity of about 1 and 0.1 mg respectively. For applications in the industry a 241Am-Be neutron source was used, and boron analysis of glasses was carried out. The inveinvestigated concentration region was between 1-6 with relative deviations of 2.5% maximal, using counting times of 10 minutes. 252Cf source was applied for the analysis of heavy metals in liquid wastes and ore samples.
