Description
The mechanical properties of Mn-Zn ferrite/zirconia composites were described earlier. The addition of zirconia was shown to increase the fracture toughness by up to a factor of three. However, the magnetic properties were adversely affected by the addition of the ZrO2. The factors contributing to this result, including grain size changes, interdiffusion, and the nonmagnetic nature of ZrO2, are discussed. Variations in the processing and the resultant microstructure which maximize the magnetic properties while still improving the mechanical properties are described
