Reprocessed uranium-An economic and strategic resource
Description
The utilization of oxide reprocessed uranium (RepU) is achievable in a wide range of nuclear power reactor SYSTEMS. Strategic arguments for recycling are relevant, however, the principal driving factor will be the relative cost of the re-use of RepU with that of producing fuel using fresh (i.e. non-irradiated) uranium. Differences between RepU and non-irradiated material and their implications for the cost of processing operations are identified. Attributes of manufacturing facilities capable of handling RepU are discussed and timescales for plant availabilities highlighted. An economic analysis illustrating the competitive position of RepU utilization is presented. (author)
