Description

Total photon cross-section measurements are performed employing argon-and krypton-filled proportional counters and a NaI(TI) detector on both sides of the K-edge of the elements, Ce, Er, and Yb and on either side of the L-edge of Gd, Dy, Er, Yb and Pb, using narrow-beam geometry. K-shell photoelectric cross sections are estimated by fitting the extracted photoelectric cross sections to log-log plots on either side and by extrapolation to the K-edge energy. The data on Gd, Er, Yb and Pb after a similar treatment give the values of the photoelectric cross sections at the L1 (upper) and L3 (Lower) edges. The total-to-K-shell ratios derived from the results have been compared with the theoretical values of Storm and Israel and those of Scofield and also with the empirical relation of Hubbell. The total-to-L-shell ratios at the L1-shell binding energy have been compared with the theoretical values of Scofield. There appears to be a general agreement between theory and experiment. (author)
