Isotopic exchange in a neutron-irradiated mixed-valence compound: Tl3(I)Tl(III)Cl6
Description
The initial distribution of Tl(I) and Tl(III) species, and its change on heating, have been investigated in solid thermal neutron-irradiated Tl4Tl6. An initial ratio of 5/l for 204Tl(III) is found and this remains constant for integral gamma-doses of 3 to 12 Mrad. The variation of the 204Tl(III) fraction with temperature is found identical to that observed in labelled Tl4Cl6 for which a genuine isotopic exchange has previously been described. It is concluded that the recoil species are rapidly converted, after the recoil processes, into stable ions. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Die anfaengliche Verteilung von Tl(I) und Tl(III) in festem, mit thermischen Neutronen bestrahlten Tl4Cl6 und die Aenderung dieser Verteilung durch Waermebehandlung wurde untersucht. Das zunaechst gefundene Verhaeltnis von 5:1 fuer 204Tl(I) : 204Tl(III) bleibt konstant fuer den Gamma-Dosisbereich von 3 bis 12 Mrad. Die Aenderung der 204Tl(III)-Fraktion mit der Temperatur ist im Ergebnis identisch mit der, die in markiertem Tl4Cl6 gefunden und fuer den ein echter Isotopenaustausch beschrieben wurde. Hieraus wird auf eine schnelle Umwandlung der Rueckstossspezies nach dem Rueckstossprozess in stabile Ionen geschlossen. (orig.)Additional details
