Radiation-ecological situation and its control in the Republic of Belarus
Description
The character of contamination of the territory of the republic with radionuclides 137Cs, 90Sr, 238Pu, 239Pu, 240Pu as a result of Chernobyl NPP accident is described. Up to now all the populated areas regardless to the level of contamination are investigated and maps of radiation situation are issued. In 1992 the levels of gamma radiation at the territory of the republic were from 10 to 150 m R/hour. Radiation contamination monitoring of surface water, which is conducted on rivers with high levels of contamination with 137Cs, has shown that was is contaminated considerably during floods. These are the rivers Dnepr, Pripyat', Sozh, Iput' and Besed'. The regular control of atmospheric air contamination is conducted in the republic. The character of contamination of air and water by industry and transport with oil products and waste water is described
