The Tevatron
Creators
Description
Since the first protons swept around the powerful collider at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in 1983, the Tevatron has confirmed a host of predictions about fundamental particles. Here is the story of the technical challenges of designing and building this 6.3-kilometer ring of superconducting magnets. During the past eight years, Fermilab has taken many steps to ensure that the Tevatron will remain a preeminent facility for particle physics. Fermilab has improved the superconducting magnet system, developed an antiproton source and constructed a particle detector. The Tevatron can now collide 900-GeV protons with 900-GeV antiprotons to generate an unmatched 1.8 trillion electron volts (TeV)
