Estimation of Am in high level liquid waste of thermal reactor fuel reprocessing plant by alpha spectrometry

  • 1. Kalpakkam Reprocessing Plant, BARC Facilities, Kalpakkam (India)

Description

Method of separation of americium from other alpha emitting nuclide by TTA extraction for the estimation of same through alpha spectrometry, does not hold good for americium estimation in reprocessing plant HLLW. This is due to the chemical characteristic of host of interfering elements which are present in higher concentration after volume reduction process. A modified extraction procedure was experimented using TOPO and TTA at different acidities to get complete Am recovery for the purpose of estimation through alpha spectrometry. Quantitative separation and estimation of Am could be achieved by the experimented method. (author)
